At each level, students get a choice of reading materials. These short non-fiction books feature a variety of topics of interest to teens and adults, but all use simple easy-to-understand vocabulary. After selecting a book, students will see a small section of text, hear it read word-by-word and then it's their turn to read. Their reading is recorded and the system immediately gives the student feedback on accuracy. If the reading was accurate enough to pass (based on passing grade levels set by the teacher), the student goes on to the next page of the book. If the student made too many errors, the system shows them the text with color-coded miscues, e.g. incorrectly pronounced words or sounds or missed words. The student is asked to read problem words again until he either gets them right, or he has tried enough times (as determined by the teacher).
Once a student successfully reads a book he takes a comprehension test with multiple choice questions. The teacher will have preset a passing grade and if the student successfully passes the test, he is free to choose another book, or stop practicing.
At any time, the student can return to his dashboard to get an overview of his studies, or choose another book from the library. All the time spent working in the tool is tracked to allow parents and teachers to see attendance. Recordings and results on readings and tests - as well as habitual problem words - are saved for teachers to review, and to address in subsequent face-to-face sessions with the students.
